conflict diamond

War-funded gemstone

A conflict diamond is a diamond mined in a war zone and sold to finance armed conflict, typically against a legitimate government.

Also called blood diamonds, these stones funded brutal civil wars in Africa during the 1990s and 2000s: The Kimberley Process was established to certify diamonds as conflict-free.

The term now extends to any gemstone extracted under exploitative or violent conditions.
