commis
Junior kitchen worker
A commis is a junior chef or assistant in a professional kitchen, working under more senior cooks to learn the trade.
The term comes from French culinary tradition, where kitchen hierarchies are precisely defined: She started as a commis before working her way up to sous chef.
Outside kitchens, commis occasionally appears in other contexts for junior assistants or clerks.
