colored sketches
Hued preliminary artwork
Colored sketches are drawings made with colored media rather than just pencil or ink—using colored pencils, pastels, watercolors, or markers.
The term distinguishes quick, informal artwork that incorporates color from monochrome sketches: The artist's notebook was filled with colored sketches of street scenes.
In historical contexts, colored sketches often served as preliminary studies for larger paintings.
