colony collapse disorder
Hives mysteriously emptying
Colony collapse disorder is a phenomenon in which worker bees abruptly abandon a hive, leaving behind the queen and immature bees to die.
First identified around 2006, it devastated commercial beekeeping operations: Colony collapse disorder wiped out a third of his hives.
The causes remain debated—pesticides, parasites, pathogens, and habitat loss have all been implicated.
