Coded messages are communications that use a system of symbols, words, or signals to conceal their true meaning from unintended recipients.
Historically associated with espionage and military operations, coded messages require both sender and receiver to share knowledge of the code or cipher.
The term also applies more loosely to any communication with hidden or double meanings: His emails were full of coded messages about the surprise party.
