clothes wringer
Fabric water extractor
A clothes wringer is a device with two rollers pressed together, used to squeeze water from wet laundry before drying.
Common on washing machines before electric dryers became standard, it was operated by a hand crank or motor.
The rollers could catch fingers or loose fabric, making it genuinely dangerous—hence put through the wringer for an exhausting ordeal.
