clay pipe
Earthen tobacco tube
A clay pipe is a tobacco pipe made from fired clay, with a small bowl and long stem.
These were the standard smoking pipes from the 16th through 19th centuries, cheap enough to be disposable.
Archaeologists find them at historical sites in great numbers.
The term also refers to unglazed ceramic drainage pipes used in construction and agriculture.
