chits

Informal debt records

Chits are small slips of paper serving as receipts, vouchers, or informal IOUs: Sign the chit and we'll settle up later.

In British English, a chit can also mean a young woman, usually dismissively: a mere chit of a girl.

The voucher sense appears in restaurants and bars where tabs are tracked on paper slips rather than immediate payment.
