chicken hawks
Armchair war advocates
Chicken hawks are birds of prey that hunt poultry—typically Cooper's hawks, sharp-shinned hawks, or red-tailed hawks.
The term is imprecise ornithologically but common among farmers.
In political slang, a chicken hawk is someone who advocates for military action but avoided service themselves: The senator's a chicken hawk—he dodged Vietnam but wants boots on the ground everywhere.
The term also appears in gay slang for an older man who pursues much younger partners.
