charettes

Intensive planning sessions

Charettes are intensive, collaborative work sessions where designers, planners, or other professionals gather to develop solutions under tight deadlines.

The format originated in architecture schools, where students would work frantically as a cart (charrette in French) collected final drawings.

Modern charettes bring together stakeholders for focused bursts of creative problem-solving: The city held a three-day charette on the waterfront redevelopment.
