change sides
Join the opposition
To change sides is to switch allegiance from one group, team, or position to an opposing one.
The phrase most often appears in contexts of conflict, competition, or debate, where someone abandons their original faction to join the other: Several senators changed sides on the bill after the committee hearings.
In sports or games, teams may physically change sides of a playing field at designated intervals.
