cave temples

Carved mountain shrines

Cave temples are religious sanctuaries carved into rock faces or natural caverns, found across Asia and the Mediterranean.

Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain traditions produced elaborate complexes with carved sculptures, painted murals, and meditation chambers: the Ajanta caves of India, the Mogao caves of China.

Some functioned as monasteries; others as pilgrimage sites.

The architecture ranges from simple meditation cells to grand halls with ornate columns and towering statues, all hewn from living rock.
