cattle-guards
Pit-crossing deterrents
Cattle-guards are metal grids set into roadways at fence lines, with gaps wide enough that livestock won't cross them but narrow enough for vehicles to pass over.
They eliminate the need for gates where roads pass through grazing land: The ranch road had cattle-guards at every fence crossing.
Also called cattle grids in British English.
