catguts

Surgical suture material

Catgut is cord made from dried animal intestines—typically sheep or goat, not cat.

It has been used for centuries as surgical suture, musical instrument strings, and tennis racket stringing.

Synthetic materials have largely replaced it, though some musicians still prefer gut strings for their warm tone: The violinist insisted on catgut strings.
