carotid sinus
Arterial pressure sensor
The carotid sinus is a small dilation in the carotid artery at the neck where it branches, containing sensors that detect blood pressure changes.
When stimulated—by massage or pressure—it can slow heart rate and lower blood pressure.
Doctors sometimes use carotid sinus massage to diagnose or treat certain heart arrhythmias.
