carhops
Parking lot servers
Carhops are restaurant servers who bring food to customers waiting in parked cars.
The term emerged with American drive-in restaurants in the mid-twentieth century, where carhops—often on roller skates—would take orders and deliver trays that hooked onto car windows.
The practice has largely disappeared, though a few chains preserve it: The carhops at Sonic still skate out with your order.
