card scanner
Access control device
A card scanner is a device that reads information from cards—credit cards, ID badges, membership cards, or similar.
Some read magnetic stripes, others scan barcodes or chips, and some capture the card's image for digital storage.
The term covers everything from retail payment terminals to the handheld devices that check IDs at venues: The bouncer ran my license through the card scanner.
