carbon copying

Replicating via transfer

Carbon copying is the act of making duplicate copies, originally by placing carbon paper between sheets so that writing or typing transfers to the pages beneath.

The term now most commonly refers to sending someone a copy of an email—the "cc" field.

To carbon copy someone is to include them as a secondary recipient: I carbon copied my boss on the message.

Figuratively, carbon copying can mean replicating something exactly: The sequel felt like they were just carbon copying the original.
