carapaces

Hard protective coverings

Carapaces is the plural of carapace, the hard upper shell that protects certain animals—most recognizably turtles and crabs, but also lobsters, horseshoe crabs, and some insects.

The word extends figuratively to any protective outer covering, especially one that seems impenetrable: She had developed a carapace against criticism.
