caltrap
Medieval road hazard
A caltrap is a spiked metal device scattered on the ground to puncture tires or injure the feet of people and horses.
The spikes are arranged so that one point always faces upward.
Also spelled caltrop.
Military and police forces use them to stop vehicles; medieval armies used them against cavalry and infantry.
