calliopes

Steam-powered fairground instruments

Calliopes are steam-powered musical instruments that produce sound by forcing steam through large whistles, traditionally found on riverboats and at circuses and carnivals.

The plural of calliope, named for the Greek muse of epic poetry, the word evokes Americana—county fairs, showboats on the Mississippi, the wheeze and shriek of carnival midways.

The calliopes announced the circus had arrived in town.
