cabman

Hack behind wheel

A cabman is the driver of a cab—originally a horse-drawn carriage for hire, now sometimes applied to taxi drivers.

The word belongs mostly to the 19th and early 20th centuries: The cabman pulled up to the curb and opened the door.

Modern usage favors cabbie or taxi driver.
