buskins
High theatrical boots
Buskins are calf-high or knee-high boots, particularly the thick-soled boots worn by actors in ancient Greek tragedy to increase their height and presence on stage.
By extension, buskin became associated with tragedy itself, contrasted with the sock of comedy: the buskin and the sock.
The word now appears mainly in historical or literary contexts.
