A bus token is a small metal or plastic coin-like object purchased in advance and used as fare for public transit.
Tokens were common before electronic payment systems, bought in bulk at a discount and deposited into the farebox when boarding: She kept a few bus tokens in her coat pocket for emergencies.
The term sometimes appears figuratively for minimal compensation or worthless currency.
