buffalo hides
Plains tepee covering
Buffalo hides are the skins of buffalo, particularly American bison, processed for use as leather, blankets, or robes.
The mass slaughter of bison in the 19th century American West was driven largely by demand for buffalo hides, which decimated herds and devastated Plains Indian cultures that depended on them: Hunters shipped buffalo hides east by the trainload.
