buddy check
Mutual safety inspection
A buddy check is a safety procedure where two people verify each other's equipment or readiness before a potentially dangerous activity.
The term originated in scuba diving, where divers inspect each other's gear before entering the water: We did a quick buddy check before the dive.
The practice extends to skydiving, firefighting, and other high-risk contexts where a partner's oversight can prevent fatal errors.
