Bruised ribs are ribs where the surrounding muscle or cartilage has been injured, typically from impact or trauma, causing pain that worsens with breathing, coughing, or movement.
The injury is less severe than a fracture but can be equally painful: The doctor said they were just bruised ribs, but it hurt to laugh for weeks.
Treatment is usually rest and pain management.
