broodiness

Contemplative, sullen state

Broodiness is a state of being broody.

In poultry, it's the instinct to sit on eggs until they hatch—a hen overcome by broodiness neglects eating and refuses to leave the nest.

In humans, it describes the longing to have children: She felt a sudden broodiness when holding her nephew.

It can also mean a moody, withdrawn temperament: His broodiness made him difficult company.
