broadcast delay
Intentional airing buffer
A broadcast delay is a brief pause—typically a few seconds—inserted between a live event and its transmission to audiences.
The delay allows producers to censor profanity, wardrobe malfunctions, or other unexpected content before it airs: The network uses a seven-second broadcast delay for live awards shows.
Also called a tape delay or profanity delay.
