brinjals
Egg-shaped purple vegetables
Brinjals is the word for eggplants in South African, Indian, and some other varieties of English.
The purple, bulbous vegetable is the same; only the name differs by region: We grilled brinjals with peppers and onions.
The word comes from Portuguese and arrived in English through colonial trade routes.
