bridge to nowhere

Pointless road extension

A bridge to nowhere is an infrastructure project that serves no practical purpose—typically a road or bridge built to a remote location with little traffic or development to justify the cost.

The phrase became iconic after a proposed Alaska bridge project drew national ridicule.

More broadly, it describes any expensive undertaking that leads nowhere useful: Critics called the new terminal a bridge to nowhere, serving a town of 200 people.
