bricking up

Permanently blocking entry

Bricking up is the act of sealing an opening—typically a door, window, or passage—by filling it with bricks and mortar.

The phrase carries associations with permanent closure and sometimes sinister concealment: They bricked up the old doorway when they renovated.

In horror fiction, bricking up evokes Poe's "The Cask of Amontillado," where a victim is entombed alive behind a wall.
