breakaway region
Self-declared independent zone
A breakaway region is a territory that has declared independence or autonomy from the country that officially controls it, typically without international recognition.
Such regions often have their own governments and borders but exist in political limbo: Transnistria has functioned as a breakaway region from Moldova since 1990.
The term implies disputed sovereignty—the parent country considers the territory still theirs.
