break the fourth wall
Address the audience
To break the fourth wall is to acknowledge the audience directly in a performance, disrupting the illusion that separates fiction from reality.
The term comes from theater, where three walls form the set and an invisible fourth wall faces the viewers.
A character who breaks it might address the camera, comment on the plot, or acknowledge they're in a story: The actor turned to the audience and said, "You didn't think it would be that easy, did you?"
