bourbon barrel
Charred oak vessel
A bourbon barrel is an oak container used to age bourbon whiskey.
By U.S. law, bourbon must be aged in new charred oak barrels, which means each barrel can only be used once for bourbon production.
These used barrels are then sold to age other spirits, beer, and wine, imparting residual bourbon flavors: The stout was aged in bourbon barrels for six months.
The barrels have become valuable commodities in craft brewing and distilling.
