bot-fly

Skin-burrowing insect

A bot-fly is a stout, hairy fly whose larvae are parasites of mammals.

The female deposits eggs on or near a host—horses, cattle, deer, or occasionally humans—where the larvae burrow into flesh or body cavities to develop.

The human bot-fly, found in Central and South America, causes painful skin infestations.

Also spelled botfly.
