border towns
Edge-of-country communities
Border towns are municipalities located at or near the boundary between two countries or regions.
They often develop distinct cultures blending influences from both sides, and their economies typically depend on cross-border trade, tourism, or transit: Tijuana and other border towns have their own character.
The term sometimes carries connotations of lawlessness or liminal identity.
