body farm
Corpse decay facility
A body farm is an outdoor research facility where human corpses are left to decompose under various conditions.
Scientists study the decay process to help forensic investigators determine time of death and other circumstances.
The term comes from the informal name for the first such facility, established at the University of Tennessee in 1981.
Researchers at the body farm placed remains in different environments to track decomposition rates.
