blue steel

Hardened iron variant

Blue steel most commonly refers to a type of gun barrel finish—metal treated to produce a dark blue-black patina that resists rust.

The finish gives firearms their classic appearance: a revolver with a blue steel barrel.

The term also names the exaggerated, pouty modeling pose popularized by the film *Zoolander*, performed with pursed lips and an intense stare: He hit them with his best blue steel.
