blue hen
First State fowl
Blue hen refers to a bird—specifically a bluish-gray game fowl known for fighting spirit.
The term is most familiar as the state bird of Delaware and the mascot of the University of Delaware, whose athletic teams are the Blue Hens.
The connection traces to Revolutionary War soldiers from Delaware who supposedly brought fighting blue hens to camp.
