blue bottle
Shiny buzzing pest
A blue bottle is a Portuguese man-of-war or similar jellyfish-like creature with a distinctive blue, balloon-shaped float—common in Australian waters where beachgoers watch for them.
The term also names several species of large flies with metallic blue abdomens, often found around carrion or waste.
In British English, bluebottle is old-fashioned slang for a police officer, from their blue uniforms.
