birthing person
One giving labor
Birthing person is a gender-neutral term for someone who gives birth, used in medical and policy contexts to include transgender men and nonbinary individuals who become pregnant.
The term emerged from efforts to make reproductive healthcare language more inclusive: The hospital updated its forms to say "birthing person" rather than "mother".
Critics see it as awkward or as erasing women; supporters view it as acknowledging that not everyone who gives birth identifies as a woman.
