birchbarks
Native American vessels
Birchbarks is the plural of birchbark—the papery outer layer of birch trees, traditionally used by Indigenous peoples of North America for canoes, containers, and writing surfaces.
The material is lightweight, waterproof, and peels easily in sheets: The museum displayed birchbarks inscribed with Ojibwe pictographs.
