bereave
Leave someone mourning
Bereave means to deprive someone of a loved one through death.
The past participle bereaved describes those left behind: the bereaved family, recently bereaved.
Bereft, an older past participle, has broadened to mean deprived of anything: bereft of hope, bereft of ideas.
Bereavement is the state of having lost someone: bereavement leave, a time of bereavement.
