beast of prey
Carnivore that stalks
A beast of prey is an animal that hunts and kills other animals for food—a predator.
The phrase is somewhat literary or formal; in everyday speech, people more often say predator or hunting animal.
Lions and wolves are beasts of prey.
The term emphasizes the creature's nature as a hunter rather than scavenger or grazer.
