battery electric vehicles

Cars without engines

Battery electric vehicles are automobiles powered entirely by rechargeable battery packs, with no internal combustion engine or fuel tank.

They draw electricity from the grid and store it in lithium-ion or similar batteries, running electric motors that drive the wheels.

Unlike hybrids, they produce zero tailpipe emissions: The city is converting its bus fleet to battery electric vehicles.

Often abbreviated BEV, or simply called electrics or EVs.
