baneberry
Poisonous woodland fruit
Baneberry is a woodland plant of the buttercup family, bearing clusters of poisonous white or red berries.
The name reflects the danger: bane means poison or death.
The berries are sometimes called doll's eyes for their appearance—white with a dark spot.
The trail guide warned us not to touch the baneberry.
