back-reference
Points to earlier
A back-reference points to something mentioned earlier—in a document, a conversation, or a piece of code.
In programming and regular expressions, a back-reference captures a matched pattern for reuse later in the same expression: The regex uses a back-reference to find repeated words.
In writing, back-references connect current discussion to previous points.
