An away goal is a goal scored by a team playing at their opponent's venue.
In tournament formats, away goals traditionally served as tiebreakers when aggregate scores were level—the team with more away goals advanced, on the theory that scoring on hostile ground is harder.
They went through on away goals despite the draw.
Many competitions have abandoned this rule.
