authenticator app
Code-generating software
An authenticator app generates temporary security codes for two-factor authentication, adding a layer of protection beyond passwords.
The app produces a new six-digit code every thirty seconds, synced with the service you're logging into: I can't access my account—my authenticator app is on my old phone.
Common examples include Google Authenticator and Authy.
